Hillbillies & Vikings

This site is focused broadly on all descendants of John Denboe, an indentured servant who came to the Crown Colony of Maryland in about the year 1664. Also, it maintains a special emphasis on the descendants of John Denbow (1797-1862) and his brother Bazeleel (1795-1857), early pioneers in the hills of Southeastern Ohio, as well as the descendants of Jón Jónsson (1841-1934) of Dalasýsla, Iceland, who was an Icelandic immigrant to Canada and now has progeny throughout North America.

1085 Marie is my older sister who was born dead due to the incompetence of the delivering physician, Dr. Theron H. Morgan. My mother said there were symptoms of fetal distress early in her labor that, according to other doctors she consulted later, should have called for an immediate c-section, which would likely have saved Marie's life. In the Still Birth Certificate Dr. Morgan tried to cover his tracks by saying the child was "malformed." There was no evidence of this. My father saw her and said she was a perfectly formed little baby girl. The umbilical cord had been pinched during labor and had cut off her oxygen supply. She died of suffocation.

1092 Marriage license issued 31 December 1844 "on oath of groom." Rev. Elias Gatchel signed the document on 10 February 1845. This license is reproduced in Bazzel's Civil War pension file. The minister and/or copyist was not too careful with his spellings, as "Denbow" is spelled "Danbow" and "Tanner" is spelled "Tennor." Some researchers have thought that this was an alternate spelling of Ruth's last name; however, I've concluded that it's just sloppy spelling, though other members of her family spell Tanner in a variety of other ways.
