Hillbillies & Vikings

This site is focused broadly on all descendants of John Denboe, an indentured servant who came to the Crown Colony of Maryland in about the year 1664. Also, it maintains a special emphasis on the descendants of John Denbow (1797-1862) and his brother Bazeleel (1795-1857), early pioneers in the hills of Southeastern Ohio, as well as the descendants of Jón Jónsson (1841-1934) of Dalasýsla, Iceland, who was an Icelandic immigrant to Canada and now has progeny throughout North America.

2076 Susan Sharp's notes: Religious Affiliation: Presbyterian Obituary: Newspaper clipping in the possession of Jean Reid Edwards. Name and date of paper are cut off. CLIFFORD SWAN REYNOLDSVILLE-- Clifford Leroy Swan, age 82, died Wednesday in Jefferson Manor, Brookville. He was a native of Reynoldsville and a retired agent for Prudential Company. Born January 7, 1908 in Reynoldville, he was a son of Horace Swan and Nellie Reid. He formerly resided in the DuBois area and was Presbyterian by religious faith. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Barbara) Wilson of Dubois and Mrs. Andrew (Beverly) Wilson of Bakerstown, Pa.; a son, Donald E. Swan of Sykesville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Shrigley of Mansfield, Ohio; a brother, Bud Swan of Zansvoort, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, and one brother. Obituary: Newspaper clipping in the possession of Jean Reid Edwards. Date and name of paper are cut off. DEATH NOTICES - SWAN: Clifford L., of Jefferson Manor, died March 21, 1990. Friends will be received Friday, 7-9 p.m., at the Robert J. 2077 Susan Sharp's Notes: According to Vivian Doney Reid it was thought that Clyde stole some money from his grandfather, Daniel Doney. She remembers one time he came to their house to visit. 2078 Susan Sharp's Notes: Middle name of Elizabeth came from the U.S. Census for Pine Creek Twp., Jefferson County, PA. According to a note found in an album of tintypes from Cora Horm Enterline. She says "'I think I got these 2 books from Aunt Lizzie Endress in Brookville. She was Grandfather's sister. 2081 Susan Sharp's notes: Tombstone in Alcola Cemetery near Hawthorne, PA. Death Certificate of Christena Holben, wife of Samuel Holben, indicated that her maiden name was Gruver. I don't know if this John & Catherine are her parents, but we found their graves while visiting the Alcolah Cemetery where Christina and Sam are buried.

2082 Susan Sharp's Notes: When we visited the Bolen Cemetery I made a note that there were stones for an Enoch Bolen and Hester, his wife. At the time I did not see any connection so I copied no information from these stones. Perhaps this is the Enoch who buried his father, brother and sister during the flu epidemic of 1849.

2093 Susan Sharp's Research Notes: Is this kid Sarah A.? If so , I really couldn't read the census taker's writing. Notes of Helen Sharp Morris indicate this is Jennie P. (writing in U.S. Census 1880 looked like Jessire)., but birth dates conflict. The child, Sarah A., appears in Vinton County birth records but not family records or Census records. 2094 Susan Sharp's Research Notes: Source of note unknown, probably Cora Enterline: Lived in Doneytown near Emerickville and had about 10 kids. Jerry Mowry was 'not a worker'. According to Vivian Doney Reid she remembers visiting an old lady, 'Aunt Salome'. She went to her house which was on the Brookville Road not very far from and on the same side as her Grandpa Daniel Doney's house.

2095 Susans Sharp's Research Notes: According to Lena Liggett, daughter of Fanny Bobo Robertson, Susan Wade Bobo was a beautiful woman and a school teacher. 2098 The 'Haldeman book' says, Edward Gigax, U.S. Veterans Hospital, Marion, Indiana (believed deceased)

Information provided by Ruth and Grace Gigax: Edward had mental problems, perhaps, due to service in WWI. They remember riding in the rumble seat of his car. Veteran of WWI. Shell shocked in battle. He spent many years later in a VA hospital.

2099 The 38 [or 43 check] Climax Street home was also a combination
notions/ice cream store which Ed Rieck purchased for Emma Michel after
Oscar died.
According to the family story, the Luther League from Christ Lutheran
Church would sometimes meet at the store where they would roll up the
rug and dance and have ice cream.
Esther Minnie Michel was needed to w ork in the store and was unableto
complete grade school.
Living down the street from the Michels was the Finch family where
Walter Michel's wife Sophie Marie Finch ws raised. Her parents were:

2100 The Battle of Bentonville (NC) was the last major battle of the Civil War. The 27th OVI of the XVII Army Corps, 1st Division- Maj. Gen. Joseph H. Mower, 1st Brigade was active in 'Mower's Charge' on May 21, 1865. The advance took place through swampy land in the rain. The Confederates counter charged; and Sherman called a halt, not wanting to get into a full scale battle.
