Hillbillies & Vikings

This site is focused broadly on all descendants of John Denboe, an indentured servant who came to the Crown Colony of Maryland in about the year 1664. Also, it maintains a special emphasis on the descendants of John Denbow (1797-1862) and his brother Bazeleel (1795-1857), early pioneers in the hills of Southeastern Ohio, as well as the descendants of Jón Jónsson (1841-1934) of Dalasýsla, Iceland, who was an Icelandic immigrant to Canada and now has progeny throughout North America.

2101 The Denbows in the Civil War: John was the father of Bazzel, Levi, Martin, James, and William who fought with him at one time or another in the 78th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Another son, George, was in the 27th OVI. John enlisted -- at age 64 -- saying he was 44. According to several entries in his military record he died in Paducah, apparently of "chronic dysentery." Another entry says he died about a month later in Bolivar, Tenn. Family tradition had said he was found in a creek with his long hair embeded in the mud. The Bolivar story would be more consistent with the family story. However, the recent discovery of the diary of a hospital steward from Paducah, Kentucky, almost certainly confirms beyond a reasonable doubt his death in Paducah at the earlier date. Denbow, John Sr. (I1229)

2102 The Elk Fork Cemetery is located just North of McArthur. Acord, Olive (I82)

2103 The family believes that Mary Catherine Denbow was the mother of Carl William Denbow Sr. This was based on a deathbed confession. It's also bolstered by DNA autosomal matches of a descendant with Denbow family members in that same line from William Denbow, the Civil War veteran, and the father of Mary Catherine.

The father may have been George Miracle, but this is not certain. However, recent DNA evidence does point to someone in the Miracle family as one descendant has a suggestive autosomal match with a person in the Miracle family.

Ron Denbow, a direct descendant in this line, says that Mary Catherine and her son lived for quite a few years with her father William, beforre she married William Tecumseh Gramlich in 1910. As a result, Ron says, Carl William became very close to his grandfather William. Ron says that as result of this closeness William's pocket watch was passed from Carl William Sr. to Carl William Jr. to him.

2112 The late Mary Denbow Petro, of Chillicothe, Ohio, wrote three essay about her family from George Washington Denbow, her g-grandfather; to his son Alonzo, her grandfather; and finally to his son Carl Kendrick Denbow, her father. Among other things she traces alcoholism from George, who had a drinking problem, to Alonzo who was a teetotaler (probably out of fear of becoming an alcoholic) and to her father, Carl, who also had a problem with the bottle. See the links below for details.

2116 The placement of this woman in this family is based on information from Gilda Haddox. Her reasoning is based on the note that accompanies a photo of Elisabeth and her husband Benjamin Scott. I'll detail that information when I better understand it. If true, it means that Benjamin and his brother Henry married sisters -- Elisabeth and her sister Cartharine. Denbow, Elisabeth (I4740)

2126 The Sharp Family Bible kept by Maude Elsie Sherer Sharp states that James was born on Monday, 13 September 1897. James' two children Ruthand and Betty, were killed with their cousin, Doris, and their grandparents, Bingham (Ben) and Bertha Collins, in a train accident on 18 August 1927 in Bucyrus, Ohio. The family was having a picnic. The train tracks ran right by the picnic ground. The grandparents, Bingham and Bertha Collins, had their three grandaughters in the car. A T&OC train crashed into the car killing all of them while horrified family members already at the picnic looked on. Robert Henderson Sharp recalled receiving the news of the tragedy. He was playing with The Campus Owls Dance Band at Mentor on the Lake during that summer and went home immediately for the funerals. He said he never will forget seeing those five caskets lined up. Collins, James Russel (I878)

2130 There are two Sarah Paith's in this database. This one, with the middle name of Ann, married to John Denbow (1827-1905), and another one married to Basil E. Denbow (1866-1920). This has caused no end of confusion among some Denbow researchers who had the wrong Sarah married to the wrong Denbow man. Paith, Sarah Ann (I3316)

2131 There was a German church record which stated that Clemensen's son,Johan Jacobus, died 8 October 1726, age nine years and 4 months. In1726 there evidently was a plague in that area for many people diedevery day. It is the theory of Harry I. Dunkelberger that this mayhave been one of the main reasons why the Dunkelbergers chose to leaveGermany. Dunkelberger, Johan Jacobus (I1673)

2132 They lived in an area called on some maps, New Iceland. The town of Gimli was sort of the capital of New Iceland. I do not know at this point whether they lived in Gimli, or out in the country in this area. I'm going to write to the local genealogical society there and see what I can find out. Gimli is about 55 miles northeast of Winnipeg.  Jónsson, Jón (I2611)

2144 This county is now in West Virginia, but at the time of his death it was still Virginia, as the new state was not admitted to the Union until a few months later. Bobo, Granville (I526)

2145 This date would fit the family story better, though it is before the Battle of Bolivar that the 78th OVI fought in. However, the diary from the Paducah hospital makes this highly unlikely.
