Hillbillies & Vikings
This site is focused broadly on all descendants of John Denboe, an indentured servant who came to the Crown Colony of Maryland in about the year 1664. Also, it maintains a special emphasis on the descendants of John Denbow (1797-1862) and his brother Bazeleel (1795-1857), early pioneers in the hills of Southeastern Ohio, as well as the descendants of Jón Jónsson (1841-1934) of Dalasýsla, Iceland, who was an Icelandic immigrant to Canada and now has progeny throughout North America.

2131 | Susan Sharp's Research Notes: Is this kid Sarah A.? If so , I really couldn't read the census taker's writing. Notes of Helen Sharp Morris indicate this is Jennie P. (writing in U.S. Census 1880 looked like Jessire)., but birth dates conflict. The child, Sarah A., appears in Vinton County birth records but not family records or Census records. Helen Sharp Morris' notes indicate that Jennie had 13 children. | Sharp, Jennie P. (I3837)
|

Esther Minnie Michel was needed to w ork in the store and was unableto complete grade school. Mower, 1st Brigade was active in 'Mower's Charge' on May 21, 1865. The advance took place through swampy land in the rain. The Confederates counter charged; and Sherman called a halt, not wanting to get into a full scale battle. The Confederates were pushed enough to retreat toward the town of Smithfield. | Denbow, George Washington (I1154)

2146 | The Denbows in the Civil War: John was the father of Bazzel, Levi, Martin, James, and William who fought with him at one time or another in the 78th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Another son, George, was in the 27th OVI. John enlisted -- at age 64 -- saying he was 44. According to several entries in his military record he died in Paducah, apparently of "chronic dysentery." Another entry says he died about a month later in Bolivar, Tenn. Family tradition had said he was found in a creek with his long hair embeded in the mud. The Bolivar story would be more consistent with the family story. However, the recent discovery of the diary of a hospital steward from Paducah, Kentucky, almost certainly confirms beyond a reasonable doubt his death in Paducah at the earlier date. | Denbow, John Sr. (I1229)

2148 | The family believes that Mary Catherine Denbow was the mother of Carl William Denbow Sr. This was based on a deathbed confession. It's also bolstered by DNA autosomal matches of a descendant with Denbow family members in that same line from William Denbow, the Civil War veteran, and the father of Mary Catherine. The father may have been George Miracle, but this is not certain. However, recent DNA evidence does point to someone in the Miracle family as one descendant has a suggestive autosomal match with a person in the Miracle family. Ron Denbow, a direct descendant in this line, says that Mary Catherine and her son lived for quite a few years with her father William, beforre she married William Tecumseh Gramlich in 1910. As a result, Ron says, Carl William became very close to his grandfather William. Ron says that as result of this closeness William's pocket watch was passed from Carl William Sr. to Carl William Jr. to him.
