Hillbillies & Vikings

This site is focused broadly on all descendants of John Denboe, an indentured servant who came to the Crown Colony of Maryland in about the year 1664. Also, it maintains a special emphasis on the descendants of John Denbow (1797-1862) and his brother Bazeleel (1795-1857), early pioneers in the hills of Southeastern Ohio, as well as the descendants of Jón Jónsson (1841-1934) of Dalasýsla, Iceland, who was an Icelandic immigrant to Canada and now has progeny throughout North America.

2251 The return date on the marriage application appears to be "5th" of October, but it could be the 3 rd, and thus the same day as the application. I going with my best guess here.

2257 The Sharp Family Bible kept by Maude Elsie Sherer Sharp states that James was born on Monday, 13 September 1897. James' two children Ruthand and Betty, were killed with their cousin, Doris, and their grandparents, Bingham (Ben) and Bertha Collins, in a train accident on 18 August 1927 in Bucyrus, Ohio. The family was having a picnic. The train tracks ran right by the picnic ground. The grandparents, Bingham and Bertha Collins, had their three grandaughters in the car. A T&OC train crashed into the car killing all of them while horrified family members already at the picnic looked on. Robert Henderson Sharp recalled receiving the news of the tragedy. He was playing with The Campus Owls Dance Band at Mentor on the Lake during that summer and went home immediately for the funerals. He said he never will forget seeing those five caskets lined up. Collins, James Russel (I878)

2261 There are two Sarah Paith's in this database. This one, with the middle name of Ann, married to John Denbow (1827-1905), and another one married to Basil E. Denbow (1866-1920). This has caused no end of confusion among some Denbow researchers who had the wrong Sarah married to the wrong Denbow man. Paith, Sarah Ann (I3316)

2262 There was a German church record which stated that Clemensen's son,Johan Jacobus, died 8 October 1726, age nine years and 4 months. In1726 there evidently was a plague in that area for many people diedevery day. It is the theory of Harry I. Dunkelberger that this mayhave been one of the main reasons why the Dunkelbergers chose to leaveGermany. Dunkelberger, Johan Jacobus (I1673)

2263 They lived in an area called on some maps, New Iceland. The town of Gimli was sort of the capital of New Iceland. I do not know at this point whether they lived in Gimli, or out in the country in this area. I'm going to write to the local genealogical society there and see what I can find out. Gimli is about 55 miles northeast of Winnipeg.  Jónsson, Jón (I2611)

2276 This date would fit the family story better, though it is before the Battle of Bolivar that the 78th OVI fought in. However, the diary from the Paducah hospital makes this highly unlikely.

2292 This marriage apparently didn't last very long. When Roll died six years later in 1912 there is no mention in either obituary that I read of a wife as either predeceasing or surviving him. She seems quickly forgotten. I've now discovered that she lived until 1957, and is buried in different cemetery from Roll. Family: Roll Halley / Jennie Skidmore (F1944)
