Hillbillies & Vikings

This site is focused broadly on all descendants of John Denboe, an indentured servant who came to the Crown Colony of Maryland in about the year 1664. Also, it maintains a special emphasis on the descendants of John Denbow (1797-1862) and his brother Bazeleel (1795-1857), early pioneers in the hills of Southeastern Ohio, as well as the descendants of Jón Jónsson (1841-1934) of Dalasýsla, Iceland, who was an Icelandic immigrant to Canada and now has progeny throughout North America.

  • Name George Washington Denbow
Birth 8 Aug 1834  Carroll, Ohio, USA Find all individuals with events at this location  [1
    Gender Male
    Note 8 Aug 1834
    • Twin of Jackson. There seems to be some disagreement about the date of birth. The date used here is from the grave stone and the grave's record form from the Adjutant General's office. Signe's work and Thompson book both list 1842. The age in 1864 listed in the Ohio Roster is 27. This agrees with neither of the above and would place his birth in 1837, rather than the 1834 date that I assume to be correct.

    • The Battle of Bentonville (NC) was the last major battle of the Civil War. The 27th OVI of the XVII Army Corps, 1st Division- Maj. Gen. Joseph H. Mower, 1st Brigade was active in 'Mower's Charge' on May 21, 1865. The advance took place through swampy land in the rain. The Confederates counter charged; and Sherman called a halt, not wanting to get into a full scale battle. The Confederates were pushed enough to retreat toward the town of Smithfield.

IN MEMORIAM OF GEORGE DENBOW OF LEWISVILLE, MONROE CO., OHIO

"On Jan. 13, 1906, just as the sun was settling, it was announced that the life of George Denbow had gone out, he lived a short time after he became afflicted. The news came as a thunderbolt from the clear sky. The physician claims his death was caused from a stroke of paralysis. He was born in Carroll County, Ohio, August 8, 1835, his age was 70 years, 5 months and 5 days. He enlisted in Capt. Brook's Company D, 27th O. V. I. He was a good soldier and remained in the front until the close of the war; during which time he never flinched from duty and thus displayed a loyalty to home and country that is beyond our province to question. And so it was in everything he undertook, whatever came he responded. Whenever friends needed his assistance, his action was of that decisive kind that impresses one with it genuineness. And now that he has passed to his reward, may we not believe that gentle mannerism in which he was taken is only evidence of God's approbation and as time goes one and we shall have occasion to reflect upon his life may we ever be ready to think and ponder the noble virtures of his life, believing in God our Father and Christ our Savior, that we shall grasp glad hands with him in a world when all imperfections cease, all sorrows fall and where we shall live eternally in heaven.

George Denbow was buried in the Braken Cemetery on Monday in the afternoon of January 15, 1906. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Neeley of Summerfield, Ohio. His remains were laid to rest by his comrades of the Jas. P. Mann Post No. 267 Dept. of Ohio of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Sons of Veterans. The bereaved family and brothers have the heart felt sympathy of their many friends."

  • Notes
    • The late Mary Denbow Petro, of Chillicothe, Ohio, wrote three essay about her family from George Washington Denbow, her g-grandfather; to his son Alonzo, her grandfather; and finally to his son Carl Kendrick Denbow, her father. Among other things she traces alcoholism from George, who had a drinking problem, to Alonzo who was a teetotaler (probably out of fear of becoming an alcoholic) and to her father, Carl, who also had a problem with the bottle. See the links below for details.
