- Notes of Jean Reid Edwards: David and Ruth must have emigrated to theU.S. in late 1868 or early 1869 as William was born in Scotland andMargaret in Barclay, Pa. David was killed in a mine accident. Heleft 7 sons,1 daughter, and 1 daughter was born two months after hisdeath. The Reid Family Bible that came from Scotland is now inthe possession of Susan Reid Sharp. Ruth Simpson's wedding ringis in the possession of Jean Reid Edwards. A vanity stand withmirror, which the family brought from Scotland, is in the possessionof Ruth Reid Neal. Obituary: Located in surname file in the Towanda,Pennsylvania Historical Society's Museum, 21 Main St., Towanda, Pa.Bradford Reporter, Towanda, Pa., Thursday Morning, April 28, 1881. By a fall of slate in the Barclay mines on Thursday last, David Reed,one of the oldest and most respected miners of Barclay was killed. Heleaves a wife and seven children to mourn his sudden death. Barclay LodgeNo. 807 was instituted July 17, 1872, and by October 1, 1877, it had amembership of 107. The first officers at Barclay were: Noble Grand,Charles Hutchinson; First Vice-Grand, John Ditchburn; Secretary, L. S.Kelder; and Treasurer, Ed Wheatley. (David Reid's tombstone indicatesthat he was a member of the Odd Fellows. In a photograph I have he iswearing an Odd Fellows pin.) She says Andrew Beveridge, a fine tenor, was leader of thefamous old choir and the others in it were Richard Simpson, WilliamDuggan, David Reed, Joseph Baitson, Mary Walker, Jane Duggan, MargaretBaitson, Robena Ditchburn, Flora Petrie, Montie Finnelson and NelliePage. Josephine Petrie was organist and the pastor at that time wasthe Rev. J. E. Petrie. Try to find the Reverend David Craft's Historyof Bradford County, Pennsylvania, published in 1878. This book isreferenced in The Romance of Old Barclay, Chapter 3, Page 5.
